CoderDojo & Africa Code Week 2015

Africa codeweek

CoderDojo are delighted to be involved in Africa Code Week which will take place from 1st to 10th October 2015.  With 17 CoderDojos in Africa already we are excited to see an event like Africa Code Week taking place, helping to spread the word about how important coding is for young people.

As coding becomes more and more important within our society, initiatives like Africa Code Week aim to empower future generations with the coding tools and skills they need to thrive in the 21st Century workforce.  This amazing educational initiative, brought to life by SAP, Simplon.co, the Galway Education Centre, Ampion and the Cape Town Science Centre will help to spread the coding revolution all over Africa over the next number of years.

During October 2015, Africa Code Week will hold hundreds of coding workshops for 20,000 kids and youths from 8 to 24 years old. These workshops will be held across 11 countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Morocco.  CoderDojo will be encouraging people in the area of these workshops to start their own Dojos and we will encourage existing Dojos to hold an event to mark the week.

In December 2013 CoderDojo and the US State Department agreed to roll out CoderDojo across Africa under the brand AfriCoderDojo.  Read the Nigeria Mentor Diary and hear about their experiences of setting up a Dojo in Africa.
