Why Open Badges are important for the CoderDojo community.

What are they? Digital badges are becoming a popular way to acknowledge digital skills achieved by attendees at Dojos. They are an online representation of skills you have obtained. They are almost like a digital Scouts badge which are awarded once someone reaches a certain level or learns a particular skill. Open badges allow you to verify your skills, interests and achievements through credible organisations whether online or off. Ten more CoderDojo clubs are to be set up over next twelve months in Ireland.

Ten new CoderDojo clubs will be set up across Ireland over the next twelve months, bringing the total number up to more than 130. The announcement, which was part of the second EU Code Week, is being done in partnership with UPC. The locations of the new clubs hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but it’s believed that some of them will be set up in Dublin, Kildare and Limerick. Coding skills considered Equally Important as Mainstream Subjects

Research carried out by Amarach Research for UPC For children growing up, computer coding is now widely considered by the public to be just as important as maths, science and languages – including Irish – research commissioned by UPC Ireland has identified, marking the current EU Code Week 11th – 17th October. In the research, carried out for UPC among 1,000 people (aged over 16 years) by Amarach Research, 2 in 3 people said that learning computer code is equally as important as learning mainstream subjects including Business, Geography, Music, History, Art, Irish, Science, Languages, Maths and English. Calls for coding and computer science to be prioritised in Irish schools!

Junior education minister Ciaran Cannon said his colleagues and government needs to prioritise the inclusion of coding and computer science in the school curriculum or risk children falling behind. A new survey found 2/3 of adults believe coding is as equal importance as maths, science and languages. 3/4 of parents said they would send their kids to coding club, like those run by CoderDojo, if they were available in their area.
