Top tech companies back CoderDojo plan!

The world’s leading tech companies have backed plans to expand CoderDojo clubs for children who want to learn computing coding. Representatives from Microsoft, IBM, AutoDesk and Mission V were all present in Sligo over the weekend to announce an expansion of the programme that offers children the opportunity to learn code in a safe and social way. Trailblazer: Meet the future. Her name is Lauren.

The nine-year-old has designed her own hit website and is a member of CoderDojo, where young people are re-inventing the world. “For this site I had to tessellate pictures for the background,” she tells me excitedly. As you may already know CodeWeek.EU is coming up on the 11th – 17th of Oct! What you may not know is that at a recent conference in Brussels, Ireland was singled out by Neelie Kroes as the exemplar country for all other EU countries regarding digital skills. CoderDojo & Codestarter partner to provide laptops to youths in underserved areas in the US.

As you may know the CoderDojo Foundation has recently partnered with Codestarter, a new U.S. based nonprofit, to provide laptops to youths in underserved areas who wish to join CoderDojo sessions. About Codestarter By focusing on underserved populations and offering hardware, Codestarter aims to open the doors to programming education for young people who previously couldn’t take full advantage of the opportunities available for learning to code with CoderDojo. Codestarter has already received pledges of nearly one hundred Acer Chromebooks which they have been distributing to selected Dojos. Showcase your project at the Web Summit

At the Dublin Web Summit main event (4th – 6th Nov) there will be a Coderdojo Booth located in the main hall. We are looking for CoderDojo Ninjas to showcase their projects that they’ve made at Coderdojo for one of these days (either the 4th, 5th or 6th) at the booth and some might even be selected to go on stage ! CoderDojo recently held the first CoderDojo Pop up Dojo at a music festival giving kids and their parents the opportunity to get a taste of it’s like to attend a Dojo. There was a total of 16, 45 minute long sessions held over 3 days. During this time over 170 young people learned how to make their own video game in Scratch for the first time!
