Happy third birthday to the CoderDojo Movement!

CoderDojo has come a long way from the initial Dojo held by James and Bill at the National Software Centre, Cork in 2011 where the original “rules” sheet still hangs in the Dojo today! Since the first Dojo here the CoderDojo movement has grown from strength to strength and as of July there are over 458 Dojos spread across 47 countries, such as Nigeria, Japan, Italy, Romania, Hawaii, the US and more! Hi-tech head ‘humbled’ by whizkid’s anti-bullying idea!

  About 250 projects were entered for the Coolest Projects event and the winning ideas included an app to help locate a charging point when an eCar is running low on juice, a Wild Western game and a smartphone selfie website. Other projects such as an anti-bullying quiz, by 11-year-old Clondalkin schoolgirl Kathleen Maughan, and a computer game for people with dyslexia also received an honourable mention…. Young coding Ninjas have the cool factor!

CoderDojo Ninjas came in their droves to DCU on the 7th and 8th of June to demo their cool and imaginative projects that they’ve been working on at their Dojos at the CoderDojo Coolest Projects awards. The Coolest Projects awards is all about encouraging CoderDojo participants, every attendee was awarded a super cool CoderDojo USB Belt for entering their projects! Codestarter partners with CoderDojo to provide laptops to kids who want to code

Starting in June CoderDojo will be partnering with a new U.S. based nonprofit, Codestarter, to offer laptops to  youths from underserved areas who wish to join CoderDojo sessions. By focusing on underserved populations and offering hardware, Codestarter hopes to open the doors to programming education for young people who previously couldn’t take full advantage of  the opportunities available  for learning to code with CoderDojo.
