Newcastle Science Central makes coding cool for Tyneside children

Kids are learning to code thanks to a free club where they can test and tune their digital skills.
Volunteer-led organisation CoderDojo is holding the fun clubs – or Dojos – every month for six to 16-year-olds at The Core at Newcastle Science Central.
The children select the theme for each session, and as well as learning to code they’ll be developing websites, apps, programs, games and more.
Karen Marshall, education, skills and engagement manager at Newcastle Science City, said: “CoderDojo is a fantastic initiative that makes learning to code a fun and sociable experience for the children.

THE use of technology in schools is common place but changes at an extra curricular club has seen how children learn about computing turned inside.
Youngsters aged between seven and 16 have attended Carmarthen’s Coder Dojo regular session that teach them how to code and learn how websites are created.
Leader of the Carmarthen Coder Dojo, Jullian Milligan said children were getting a head start in Carmarthen but the group relies on donations to keep them open.
Mr Milligan said: “We are free to children aged between seven and 16 year-old and we are grateful for any donation we have so we can keep the group open. The money from Cash for Communities would go towards buying new kit and equipment for the children to use.
