Sean O’Sullivan took the stage at the ITLG Young Innovators event in Shannon two weeks back to announce the MATHletes Challenge 2014. The MATHletes.ie Challenge has been specifically set up for Irish students in association with Khan Academy.

MATHletes Challenge 2014 is a pioneering maths tournament for Ireland based on the Khan Academy approach to learning and teaching maths. Launched by Irish American Technology Entrepreneur Sean O’Sullivan and Ciaran Cannon T.D., Minister for Training and Skills at the Department of Education, the Challenge provides participants with a fun, competitive, engaging and rewarding educational experience.

“MATHletes is an online competition that uses the Khan Academy website giving thousands of students across Ireland the chance to compete with each other, and improve their maths abilities..”

Students from 5th and 6th class in primary school and 1st to 3rd year in secondary school junior cycle will compete online and face to face against their peers, with over €20,000 in prizes and the title of MATHletes Challenge Champion 2014 on offer. Students can participate individually or with their school, with top scorers advancing to the in-person county, provincial and national finals, in May. Students will also be able to connect with other contestants by attending free Saturday Khan Clubs which will be held in the National Education Centres across the country. Students and schools can sign up for MATHletes Challenge 2014 at mathletes.ie

We would encourage CoderDojo students to enter the MATHletes challenge. The MATHletes Challenge provides the opportunity for Dojo students to improve their mathematical skills (which is important when learning to code) by using the Khan Academy site. The Challenge also gives the student a chance to compete with other students in Ireland developing their skills and they can win up to €20,000 in prizes. We hope you take part in this years MATHletes Challenge.
