Partnership with Gaisce

CoderDojo is delighted to announce that we, with the help of the Hello World Foundation) have recently partnered with Gaisce. Gaisce – The President’s Award is Ireland’s National Challenge Award for young people and the country’s most prestigious and respected individual Award programme. Their mission is to contribute to the development of all young people through the achievement of personal

challenges. Gaisce is a self directed personal development programme for young people aged between 15 – 25 from all over Ireland where participants are challenged to work for a set amount of time on challenges of their choice within three categories, community involvement, personal skills and physical recreation.

So, where does CoderDojo fit into this?

After meeting with Gaisce we realised there were a number of synergies between CoderDojo and Gaisce. So from now on Dojo attendees across the country can have their time at their Dojo count towards two different Gaisce categories; personal skill or community involvement. Within personal skill a young person can have the skills they learn at their Dojo counted. The category that we are particularly excited about is community involvement!  CoderDojo is a community orientated movement and as everyone involved knows there is usually a bustling community around each Dojo. Now young people working towards their Gaisce award can get involved by either becoming an administration volunteer or mentoring at their local Dojo both which will count towards the community involvement category.

Girls and CoderDojo

Everyone in the technology sector is aware of the glaring gender gap. Many Dojos have found that among younger age groups 7-13 there are equal numbers of boys and girls, but that girls drop off when they hit their teenage years. Partnering with Gaisce will put CoderDojo and coding on the radar of thousands of transition year girls and hopefully encourage them to get involved in their local Dojo and learn a new skill or help out!

If you are a student working towards your Gaisce award please visit the Dojo Listing page to find your local Dojo and get involved.

If you are an Irish Dojo looking to get help why not reach out to your local secondary schools and ensure that everyone knows they can volunteer with you as their community involvement.
